Asha Bhonsle vs the rest ...

Only a mere couple of years ago FG here and JvS appearing under the label DCL were enlisted by a certain record-industry guy to provide a certain record label with numerous remixes of various peeps on said-record-labels-books. Pony-tailed-record-guy (who will rename nameless - but for the purpose of this post will be refferred to as HE .... all meeting with HE always took place in various 5-star hotels around Hong Kong - always over fine-food/fine-wine and rather dull boring conversation that always ended up discussing his activities at the races and hotels with various lasses and lads around town - all rather dull and tiring - BIG TIME ..... ho hum ....

anyways - we were chucked various splits of various dudes n dudettes and left to our own devices in remix-bedroom-land - cutting and splicing this and that as you are want to do these days thanks to the glories that are digital-audio-thingies and assorted plugin-thangies..... some got released (a number on cassette-only-releases for India - these I would love to see but alas as is often the case, the label forgot to get us copies - durgh.) Some remained in the can (a certain canto-opera rendition of David Bowies - China Girl, remains a favorite forgotten classic) - and some despite non-release are discussed to this day on-da-web - and will one day be leaked - Barry white vs Asha Bhosle your time is nigh ....

One that did however make it out - and to this day I still enjoy playing at times (in fact I spun this out with Ansuman Biswas on tabla last year at the Exeter Pheonix (to much confusion from Ansuman it must be stated!) .... is our remix of young Nelly Furtado - teamed up against Asha Bhosle in a doped-up sound-clash - this was remixed in the home of JVS in sunny south-side of Hong Kong island - and despite the skills of JvS on bass - contains a crushing one-fingered (one-note bass line) from FG on a Korg Prophecy - rockin stuff if I must compliment myself (you are advised to differ !! )...

Well - not wanting to risk imprisonment due to copyright infringment of our own track (these things can happen) - I have not stuck this babe up for circulationj before - but alas seems some kind gent has done it - following on from some discussion on some board or tother regarding bangra - so thanks Kenneth - here is his link - enjoy .......

re.CORD out now on COCOSOLIDCITI ..

Taken a while for them to finally get it out (2 years late me thinks) - but at last the global-conspiracy-sound-clash that is re.CORD is being shipped ...

This is a DVD/CD release featuring 10 tracks from Richard.H.Kirk, Digital Cutup Lounge, Franz De Ward (Goem, Freiband) and others - all reprsenting their favorite conspiracy theories via music, video and text. This project took the form of a large red-flight-box, that was sent via recorded-delivery to each artist in turn, who deposited media into it prior to sending it onwards .... finally returning to the Battery Operated peeps, who have now finally mixed/remixed and packaged the thang ...

The original tracks sit on the DVD and the remixes by Battery Operated are on the CD. The film remix also sits on the DVD and is a ting of beauty.

Orders and more info waiting for you over at : http://www.cocosolidciti.com/index.htm

Corporate smashed-up lounge..

The laptop entity that is Digital Cutup Lounge - have often been presented with what can be termed 'weird-ass' gig opportunities ... I have just got back from yet another of these type of gigs - where sitting behind a screen with a bunch of fellow techy types (live video screening, multi-media graphics etc etc etc) - my role being to blast out a quad-mix of sonic stimulants to a room full of semi-celebs ... and drunken open-wallets .... (all in the good cause of a charity that for the sake of this article, although being of worthy merit, shall remain nameless) ....

The celebs were of interesting quality - a certain ex-news-reader performed with the sort of professionalism that was quite awe-inspiring (if not perhaps somewhat school-teacher-like) -

An ex-nude-page-three-type famous for nothing more than the removal of clothing - did the normal modddelll swirls-n-pouts .... now I know what happens to yesterdays page-three-gals - they turn up unexpected as VIPs at charity gigs (makes total sence no less) ...

the pout ....

Some guy who not a single person had ever heard of - did his best to make sure that everyone thought he was a STAR ..... mate - take a hint - no one knows ya, and turning up for what I know is your third charitly-gig this week (and pretending to be shocked when requested to speak - juz don't cut it baby !!) ...

the actor (yeah right) .....

Anyhows...

The reason for this rant is that it seems DCL are scheduled to play at least 2 nights in Kuala Lumpa and Singapore in early May - for some wacked-out nightclub-corporate-bash - yip-skip-and-shout "mines a cocktail by tha pool mannn..." ... yet again we get to roll out the DCL-fucked-up-lounge-machine of computers/fretless-bass/drums/geetar melt-down mayhem .... I love these gigs actually - and it is a great chance to hook up with some long-time-not-seen types .... the last time DCL rolled out on the commercial-circuit for this type of thang was late 2003, when we entertained the Princess of Thailand and other notbles ... much fun being had by both me and John joined for this occasion by fellow funksers Jun Kung and Jondi Mac ....

Jondi and jun in full-on rockout mode .......

Hopefully we should be able to get Jun on board for this one, if we can first locate the dude, and then tempt him from his idylic retreat in Macau.....

Will post developments on what hopefully promises to be one of those full-on-bizzarre duo of gigs .... for now lets leave the last word (or perhaps look), to Alex - stage manager for the afore-mentioned Bangkok gig - here she observes the onstage-situation during our pre-gig sound-check .... think her expression pretty much sums up the typical DCL experience !!

"the horror, the horror....."

English Punk

This just through from my buddy (and sometime partner in extreme noise-crimes) Simon Poulter - currently artist in residence at HDLU, Osijek, Croatia

I will be doing a guitar performance in the old square in osijek on saturday evening.

Go to http://www.viral.info/osijek/ and check out via the live webcam.

The mind boggles somewhat - on his return (should he be allowed to) - we will be hitting the road as a laptop-guitar-thrash duo - dates to include darkest corners of Devon/Newcastle and London - aaaawwwwwwllllrrrightt - rnr !!

Last week we were holed up together in Glasgow - where the guitar terrorist tried to sell himself - to zero enthusiasm from all ....... can't imagine why ????

Risk Acadamy - Center of Contemporary Art - Glasgow

This week finds me in Glasgow - and a very fine place indeed it is.

Working as a new-media facilitator (mostly for sound-based projects) for 10 artists, activists, social scientists and others. This is being run as an intensive 7 day workshop over 3 floors of the very new and very fine Center of Contemporary Arts, based right in the center of Glasgow.

Updates on the work in progress to follow - along with some street-observations - plus the odd photo ..

More later .
